Transcranial magnetic stimulation - final step to treat depression
After exhausting all depression treatments, one turns to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive procedure that utilizes a targeted pulsed magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression.
- Functioning
TMS is administered when the patient is awake and alert and takes up to 40 minutes to complete. An electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead. The magnetic pulse delivered by the electromagnet, stimulates the nerve cells in that region of your brain which is involved in mood control and depression.
The targeted pulse magnetic field stimulates the affected region of the brain and results in active changes by eliminating the inactivity that the brain is suffering from. The process is a simple in-office treatment that is administered in approximately four to six weeks. Since, the treatment involves delivering repetitive magnetic pulses to the brain, it is also called as repetitive TMS or rTMS.
